Information for Students in Grade 12
Human Rights and Peace Scholarship
In 2004, the Durham District School Board created a scholarship for graduating secondary school students for leadership in human rights and peace in the school/community. This opportunity for students was created on the occasion of the retirement of Lewis Williams, a former administrator and Ethnocultural and Race Relations Officer.
Eligibility:
Candidates must have demonstrated a history of leadership in human rights, fighting discrimination, building social harmony and peaceful communities.
Criteria:
A nominee must have made a significant contribution toward eliminating prejudice or discrimination and working to increase social harmony and peaceful communities.
The contribution should be sustained and innovative, demonstrating leadership and the promise of long-term improvement or greater public awareness, in the area of human rights and peaceful communities.
Submission:
Each student package should contain the application form and two letters of reference (at least, letter should be from a member of your school administration or teaching staff).
Selection:
The selection committee of the Durham District School Board including the Manager of Communications, Andrea Pidwerbecki, current Race Relations facilitator Philip Howard and Lewis Williams will review each application and notify the winner prior to the June board meeting.

OSAP / FINANCIAL AID PRESENTATION:
Those students who are thinking of applying for OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) should sign up to attend a presentation by a Durham College/UOIT Financial Aid representative. The information presentation will be held in our auditorium on Thursday May 27th during period 4. Students must sign up outside Guidance in order to attend. See your Guidance counsellor if you need more information.
NEW SCHOLARSHIPS OUT!
If you wish to be considered for these scholarships you must complete the applications and submit to your Guidance counsellor by May 1st. A selection committee will forward the chosen applications on to the appropriate site.
